No. 1 Tennessee (24-0, 3-0 SEC) defeated Austin Peay (16-9), 9-1, on Tuesday in the Midstate Classic at Ridley Sports Complex in Columbia, Tennessee.
Tennessee tied its best start to open a season in program history (2006). The Lady Vols lead the all-time softball series, 20-0, against Austin Peay, dating to March 24, 1996.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementErin Nuwer (11-0) started for the Lady Vols and pitched four innings. She totaled three strikeouts and 55 pitches (34 strikes) against 15 batters. Nuwer allowed two hits, one run (one earned) and zero walks.
Maddi Rutan also pitched two innings in relief for Tennessee. She recorded two strikeouts and 36 pitches, including 24 strikes, against seven batters.
Tennessee's offense totaled nine hits, including home runs from Makenzie Butt and Alannah Leach.
The Lady Vols are ranked No. 1 for a fourth consecutive week in the NFCA/GoRout Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll.
