The New York Yankees apparently took a chance at replacing Anthony Volpe at shortstop early this offseason.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe New York Post's Joel Sherman reported in a new article that the Yanks inquired with the Texas Rangers about star SS Corey Seager.
It certainly took a while for that rumor to come out, but man, it's fascinating.
There's been a lot of speculation about the Yankees potentially needing an upgrade at shortstop. Volpe has some pop in his bat, but he's wildly inconsistent at the plate and in the field.
He's also hurt right now, and Jose Caballero is set to be the Opening Day starter at shortstop.

It sounds like any Seager chatter is old news now, and that there won't be any deal coming together.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt would've been quite the statement move for the Yankees to make.
They've gotten a lot of negativity from their fanbase for essentially bringing back the same roster. Seager certainly would've made things different.
There's another way of looking at this, too.
The way insiders get stories like these is because someone leaks them information. And the Yankees could like the idea of letting their fans know that, "Hey, we actually tried to do something."

So even if these talks were very preliminary, having Sherman report this is at least a positive inertia kind of thing for the Yankees.

Still, Seager would've looked great in pinstripes.
