NEW MILFORD - The Trumbull High gymnastics team got the job done at the State Open for the third straight season Saturday at New Milford High School.

The second-seeded Eagles finished with 144.225 points to edge top-seeded Ledyard/Waterford/St. Bernard (142.525) for an Open three-peat.

Ledyard/Waterford/St. Bernard's Alyssa McLeod earned the all-around title with a score of 37.575. Teammate Capri Sferrazza was second (37.025), and Tessa Chamberlin of Trumbull took third (36.500).

McLeod won the uneven bars and the floor exercise. Chamberlin and Southington's Taylor Cooley shared top honors on beam, while Farmington's Alexa Sardinas won the vault.

"I'm honestly so proud of how I did today," said Chamberlin, who scored 9.225 on floor (2nd) and 9.500 on beam. "I've been working so hard at the gym and just doing my routines over and over again, and came out and did what I had to do."

Trumbull, the Class L champions, also had strong efforts from Sara Renda on vault (9.350) and Kayla Algeri on uneven bars (9.275).

"We are very proud of our girls," Trumbull coach Cathy McMahon said. "They worked really hard. They had a lot of confidence and they came out today and did what they had to do."

Alyssa McLeod had a 9.475 on floor and 9.675 on bars for the Class M champs.

"I'm feeling pretty good. There is definitely room to improve," McLeod said.

Sardina was thrilled with her vault crown.

"It's really exciting," Sardinas said. "I have worked really hard, and also seeing all the other amazing gymnasts really helped me and pushed me to be the best that I could."

The New England championships are Saturday, March 7 at Fitchburg (Mass.) High School.
