Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed a delightful throwback for fans of her iconic ’90s role when discussing her involvement in the upcoming horror-comedy sequel Ready or Not 2: Here I Come.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come picks up right after the events of the 2019 surprise hit Ready or Not. In that original, Samara Weaving’s Grace MacCaullay experienced the wedding from hell when her new in-laws’ traditional game of hide-and-seek devolved into a murderous fight for survival. Ready or Not 2 stars Weaving, Gellar, Kathryn Newton, Elijah Wood, Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, and Kevin Durand.

While speaking with Entertainment Tonight about the film, Gellar revealed that Newton, who plays Grace's sister, Faith, intentionally referenced one of Buffy’s looks for her character, something that Gellar didn’t even realize at first. Read Gellar’s full comments below:

What's really funny is I didn't know any of this. So Kathryn [Newton] brought in a picture of Buffy in this outfit. She had sort of had this idea of what it was.

And then I'm in the first scene with her, and I was like, “You know, your outfit reminds me of something.” And she was like, “Does it?” So I have a great side-by-side. Yeah, the hairdo is exactly the same.

The look Newton referenced was none other than Gellar’s iconic outfit from the pilot episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Newton’s character in Ready or Not 2 replicates the look, from the blue button-down shirt to the messy updo. It’s a small but potent Easter egg that Buffy fans will absolutely relish when the new movie hits theaters.

Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are back as directors for the anticipated sequel, which takes place immediately after the events of its predecessor, after Grace was approached by the police in the first Ready or Not's ending.

In the sequel, it seems that Grace is still being hunted, this time by new rich people who are trying to challenge her for what essentially is control of the world. She will be joined by her estranged sister, Faith, in the fight as they’re thrust into a brutal competition with four rival families vying for control of something called the High Seat of the Council, an ominous prize that could grant immense power to whoever survives.

The trailer shows Grace waking up after the chaos of the first film, only to find herself kidnapped by a group dubbed the "high council families," who force her into another deadly game, this time with her sister's life on the line.

As the sisters are faced with nearly impossible odds and tasked with both surviving and protecting one another, this new, twisted version of the deadly game that once nearly cost Grace her life seems to be far from over.

Gellar’s revelation about Faith’s outfit adds an extra layer of enjoyment to the film’s release, especially for those who grew up with Buffy. The ’90s supernatural series became a pop culture staple thanks to its blend of horror, humor, and sharp character work, and seeing its influence, even with a small nod, in the sequel to a beloved contemporary horror film is bound to spark excitement.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is scheduled to hit theaters this spring, ushering in a new chapter in the cult-favourite horror series. With its lethal games, new ensemble cast, and playful callbacks to horror history, the sequel is shaping up to be one of 2026’s most anticipated films.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come comes out in theaters on March 20.
