Set in a decaying world ruled by cosmic entities, this upcoming dark fantasy open-world RPG combines the environmental storytelling of Elden Ring with the post-apocalyptic setting of Fallout to bring us one of 2027's most exciting-looking releases.

Developed by Matthaios Lappas, Asthenia is an open-world RPG set in a world of darkness and disease. As the player, you will take on the role of Adam, an ordinary man who suffers a tragic event and, as a result, is now trapped in an otherwordly dimension. With this dimension decaying by the second, Adam must navigate seemingly deserted towns, ruins, temples, industrial areas, and more, in order to discover the secret of the land and most importantly, escape it.

However, with the land ruled over by ancient entities who are currently embroiled in an ancient war, Adam will have to get to the bottom of their ongoing conflict as well as discover the source of the disease which plagues the land. Over time, he will soon discover that the world is not as abandoned as he had first thought, and other helpless souls are currently trapped in Asthenia.

Featuring close-range combat using the ancient Gauntlet, atmospheric and mysterious locations home to all manner of hidden items, resources, enemies, upgrades, weapons, journals, and more, and limited health, Asthenia is not for the fainthearted, pushing the limits of the RPG genre to its limits.

This New Dark Fantasy RPG Is One To Watch

With nods to everything from Elden Ring to Fallout, and even a bit of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim sprinkled in, too, Asthenia may just be a game of the year contender when it launches sometime in 2027. For now, however, players can look forward to fighting up close or setting traps for their foes, discovering hidden bosses that will test their every skill, obtain upgrades and upgrade their character, and even find the tombs of ancient guardians and lead them to fight alongside them.

The story of Asthenia has three different endings to explore, and so your choices along the way will shape how your time in the decaying land will come to an end. However, in an unforgiving world without mini-maps or quest markers, it will be up to you to decide your own fate.

Developed by a solo developer with Asthenia being their debut title, their aim was "to develop a deeply personal story and interactive experience that explores both dark and hopeful themes within an immersive world" and it is already pretty clear that they have achieved just that.
